A series of “collective research workshops” are proposed to investigate the marine identity of Peng Chau island and the links that tighten residents with the surrounding marine environment.
The format of “collective research workshops” aims at generating knowledge about Peng Chau from the perspective of the people who inhabit the territory. Participants are island residents who come with their varied backgrounds and want to contribute to the island culture. They all bring their own experience, insights and perspectives and lead the research in an original direction, grounded to the territory as it is lived. Meanwhile, researchers and experts from related fields are invited to participate, comment and reflect upon the work directly (by involving with the workshop) or indirectly.
These workshops have the objective of making visible and highlighting local heritage (tangible and intangible) and strengthening social cohesion and intergenerational links. The format enables research to be directly connected to the local communities’ representations, needs and aspirations. It also hopes to help develop perspectives on how to live together in ways that are socially, environmentally and culturally respectful of the territory, and make sense for the future.
A first workshop will be set up with the island’s inhabitants, inviting them to present photographic archives including the presence of the sea. Memories and reflections will be recorded. The team will study the collected data and create an online photographic archive and a photographic exhibition (more information).
A second workshop will be set up to identify and monitor shellfish and wild herb collection activities on the coast. The team will then work on a zine of culinary recipes using foraged produces and a moment of conviviality open to the public will conclude the workshop by sharing the recipes.
The third workshop will look at local architectural techniques and spatial agencies established to develop the coastline and access to the sea. The team will discuss with users to learn about material uses and ad hoc techniques, map the informal arrangements and propose structures and stories building upon local ways and needs.
